Independent Custody Visitors

ICVA Logo Gold thumbnail
An Independent Custody Visitor (ICV) is an unpaid member of the public who makes random, unannounced visits to police custody.  Custody visits are not conducted alone, but with another ICV.  Pairs of volunteers are rostered to cover custody suites at Bridewell, the City of Nottingham and Mansfield.

ICVs are asked to provide an impartial view of the welfare of detainees, checking that their rights and entitlements have IiV-colour-thumbnailbeen offered.  ICVs are also able to report on the condition of the custody environment.  ICVs are asked to produce an electronic report each time they make a visit and issues raised are recorded and actioned as appropriate.

The ICV scheme is included in the NOPCC Annual Report which can be found here.

The latest ICV Annual Report (2020/2021) can be found here.
