Independent Custody Visitors Scheme
Our duty to maintain custody standards
The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Nottinghamshire is responsible for running a volunteer scheme which ensures high standards are maintained in police custody.
An Independent Custody Visitor (ICV) is an unpaid member of the public who makes random, unannounced visits to police custody suites.
Custody visits are not conducted alone, but with another ICV. Pairs of volunteers are rostered to cover custody suites in the City of Nottingham and Mansfield.
ICVs are asked to provide an impartial view of the welfare of detainees, checking that their rights and entitlements have been offered.
ICVs are also able to report on the condition of the custody environment. ICVs are asked to produce an electronic report each time they make a visit and issues raised are recorded and actioned as appropriate
The ICV scheme is included in the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Nottinghamshire's Annual Report which can be found here.
The latest ICV Annual Report (2022/2023) can be found here.
As part of the Police and Crime Commission’s commitment to transparency, each quarter the custody demand data for Nottinghamshire Police will be published below.
