Police and Crime Survey Results

What is the Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Survey?

Police and Crime Commissioners are elected to represent the public in ensuring the county has the best possible policing, crime prevention and victim support services.

So it is important to have a range of methods of gathering public opinions, to help inform and guide that work and ensure all of our diverse communities are being served.

One of the ways the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Nottinghamshire does this is through the Police and Crime Survey.

This has been running since June 2017, when the then Nottinghamshire PCC Paddy Tipping commissioned the independent research company Information By Design to undertake a robust and representative longitudinal survey of resident perceptions on crime, policing and community safety.

Fieldwork for the survey is undertaken every three months based on a sampling scheme which ensures good geographical coverage and is representative by age, gender, employment status and ethnicity.

As a moderated self-completion survey, teams of interviewers work across the 189 wards in Nottinghamshire to distribute questionnaires, offer support in completing them and if not required, leave the self-completion questionnaire with the respondent to complete, before returning later to collect it.

The survey provides a margin of error of +/-3% at the 95% confidence level across the force area. The survey achieves over 4,200 completed responses each year.

How is the information used?

The information is used to help to make sure that the police service meets the needs of the community and is responding effectively to local priorities.

It also helps to provide a robust and consistent measure of the prevalence of crime, the proportion of crime reported to the police, the needs of victims and extent to which those needs are met, levels of trust, confidence and satisfaction with the police and views on policing priorities.

No personal or personally identifiable information is made available to the Commissioner as part of this process or passed on to any other organisation.

If you have any questions about the survey, please telephone Information By Design on 01482 467467 or contact the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Nottinghamshire via officepcc@notts.police.uk.
