Why do we have a Police and Crime Commissioner?

Proposed changes to the Police governance structure became a reality in September 2011 after the Coalition Government passed the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act.

This means that from November 2012, Police Authorities ceased to exist and have been replaced with directly-elected Police and Crime Commissioners.
