Youth Commission
Youth Commission
The Nottinghamshire Youth Commission (Notts YC) was established in 2015 with funding from the Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner. It provides a forum for young people aged 14 to 25 to provide independent advice, scrutiny and support in delivering the objectives of the Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Plan. It also provides a mechanism to seek the views of young people from across the police force area on important matters relating to policing and crime prevention.
- The overall aim of the Nottinghamshire Youth Commission is to allow young people to influence policing policy and practice, build trust and confidence in local policing and strengthen police legitimacy in Nottinghamshire. The project will provide an important vehicle for young people to support, challenge and inform the work of the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Nottinghamshire. The project will also give participants the opportunity to build skills and experience to succeed as a young adult and beyond.
The Notts YC aims to provide a high-quality engagement opportunities for young people across Nottinghamshire in order to help influence policing policy and practice, shape and inform local services and improve trust and confidence in the police. The project will aim to:
- Engage young people cross Nottinghamshire from diverse backgrounds.
- Partner directly with the PCC, representatives from Nottinghamshire Police to ensure young people are heard in raising policing and community safety issues affecting young people
- Engage and consult young people within schools, colleges, and communities
- Facilitate the Nottinghamshire Youth Independent Advisory Group and associated scrutiny practices, with support from Nottinghamshire Police and OPCC
- Build relationships with police and break down barriers that exist between officers and young people.
- Embed the principle of the Nottingham Youth Charter
To support the priority ‘Trust and Confidence within the Police’, Notts YC members designed and developed the script for an animated film called ‘Know Your Rights’. In February 2023 members got together to plan the storyboard for the animation. The aim of the animated film is to educate young people on their rights when being stopped and searched and what a stop and account is.
In March 2023, the Notts YC contacted a local film maker in Nottingham called Sam Morgan from Film 4 to help bring the ideas to life.
Sam Morgan worked closely with the Notts YC members throughout this process. Members collaborated with Sam to design the style of the animation including backdrops and how the characters should look.
In April 2023, 5 members met at Nottingham DTR Studios to record the voiceovers for the film, one member said about their experience: ‘’It was amazing, I really enjoyed being a part of this process as doing a voice over is something I have never done before but always wanted to do.
"I was very happy to be a part of this process and I think the film will be great for young people to learn about the rights around stop and search."
