Support for maintaining policing services with precept increase

3 February 2025

Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Gary Godden today spoke of how he felt the “weight of public safety” on his shoulders as he proposed a policing precept tax increase.

Commissioner Godden said he recognised that people were struggling with the cost of living but the proposed £13.95 a year increase for Band D properties would prevent the need to cut officer numbers and services during 2025/26.

He said it would mean policing services could be sustained and improved and that the most vulnerable people in the county would continue to be supported.

After hearing Commissioner Godden’s proposals and having the chance to ask questions, the majority of members of the Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Panel voted to support the increase, during the meeting at Nottinghamshire County Hall today.

The Commissioner will now finalise the budget plans for Nottinghamshire Police and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Nottinghamshire for the next financial year.

The panel had heard that a public consultation, participated in by thousands of people, had shown a large majority of support for an increase in the precept, following a door-to-door Police and Crime survey, an online poll and focus groups.

Chief Constable Kate Meynell also gave a presentation to the panel on Nottinghamshire Police’s progress after it was put into “engage status” following an inspection by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire Services.
