Commissioner Godden joins policing teams on the beat

15 July 2024

Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Gary Godden joined neighbourhood response teams in West Bridgford for a ride along as part of Response Policing Week of Action recently.

The week, highlights the vital work of response teams up and down the country and saw Nottinghamshire Police bring attention to the fantastic work of response teams across the city and county.

Commissioner Godden joined PC Sophie Elsom in West Bridgford on a response shift which saw her responding to a multitude of incidents which reflected the diversity of jobs officers must attend.

The shift began with a visit to a woman who had been the victim of fraud to ensure she was in good spirts and had been updated on the status of her case.

The Commissioner took the time to speak with the woman to understand what had happened and advised her on how to get a copy of Nottinghamshire Police’s Fraud Protect booklet which contains useful advice on how to avoid fraud in future.

Following on from that PC Elsom was called to assist East Midlands Ambulance Service in keeping the peace after a young man was taken to a nearby hospital under the Mental Health Act.

Speaking during the shift Commissioner Godden said: “It was fantastic to join PC Elsom out on response, and I thank her for her time and professionalism. Having been a response officer myself for many years, it was incredibly insightful to see how things have changed, and those areas that have remained the same.

“What it highlighted was the vast range of incidents that require the attention of response officers and the multitude of skills and knowledge needed to deal with them all in a professional and caring manner.

“My thanks go to all response officers who work to keep us safe across the city and county, and I look forward to being able to join them on many more shifts in future.”

Throughout the week of action, which took place from June 24– 30, Nottinghamshire Police drew attention to several case studies from officers including a response officer who described the trust she has built with domestic abuse survivors to ensure violent offenders are brought to justice.

PC Rebecca Cooling, based in Worksop, has been a response officer for the last four years and has delivered a top-class service to those struggling with domestic violence.

In February this year, officers were called to an incident in Worksop, where a man had allegedly attacked and threatened to kill his former partner.
