“We must never underestimate the bravery, sacrifice and dedication our police provide in the line of duty, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to keep the public safe."

The heartfelt message from Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Caroline Henry comes following the death of a serving officer in the line of duty.

Sergeant Graham Saville, a response officer based at Newark Police Station, died yesterday after sustaining serious injuries when he was hit by a train as he attempted to save a distressed man on Thursday.

Commissioner Henry said: “This is a tragic and utterly devastating incident where a police officer has lost his life to save the life of another.

“This has sent a shockwave through policing and all those that were close to Sergeant Graham Saville. My heart goes out to them all.

“Everyone at the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner shares in the public sadness of Sgt Saville’s death. We will work alongside the force to support Sgt Saville’s family, as well as those affected by this tragic event in any way we can moving forward.”
